But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. (Nehemiah 9:17).

In the last newsletter, we looked at importance of prayer in rebuilding the broken areas taking Nehemiah’s example. We saw Apostle Peter giving a corresponding wall of life that has to be built. ...make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love... they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge ... 2peter 1:5-8. In this bulletin, as we prepare for the HCFI prayer week (1st – 7th January 2014), we are looking at God’s word and confession as steps for effective prayer basing on Nehemiah 8 and 9.

The first week of January is a prayer week for HCF globally, and we are called upon to be zealous in following the order sent to us from HCFI and we are adding on our national, then our healthy facility/Health Center/Hospital prayer requests. Let us have time to gather or meet for this cause. Nehemiah stresses out about seven (7) characteristics of an effective and fruitful meeting or assembly which I believe if we take them can make our week of prayer fruitful:

  • People have a zeal for the meeting (assembly). Neh.8:1 says; “all the people assembled as one man”. People attended because they were wanted to and not because they were forced or ordered to.
  • People were united in purpose. “Gathered as one man” Neh.8:1, also indicates that they were united in the same cause. Division among brethren makes worship unacceptable or impossible.
  • They were humble and attentive. Neh.8:3, says ... and all people listened attentively to the book of the law”. We are called to be very good listeners, attentive and ready people to share during our meetings of prayer.
  • There was reading and studying of the word of God. “...read from the book of the Law of the Lord their God for a quarter of the day, and spent another quarter in confession and in worshiping the LORD their God” Neh.8:3, 7-8; 9:3. reading and sharing scripture relevant for the day is very important in our prayer meetings.
  • They had made preparations. This is indicated by the fact that they had built a special platform for the priest Ezra to stand on. Leaders of the fellowship and prayer meetings, let us prepare be we go for meetings.
  • They were reverent. “when the book was read, they all stood up (Neh.8: 5-6), Later, “ they bowed down and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground” the LORD is almighty king of the universe, worthy of all praise, honor, and glory. Let us give reverence to our God during our meetings.
  • People were actively involved. When the law was read; they stood up. They responded with Amen! Amen! To Ezra’s words of praise to God and they bowed their faces to the ground and worshipped. Let us be such active in our prayer meeting.
  • Let us now look at the impact of true worship and prayer meeting basing on the above characteristics:

  • People who had assembled for a feast, started mourning and weeping because the word of God cut across their hearts, they realized they were great sinners (Neh.8:9b).
  • They celebrated not selfishly but shared with the needy who also got an opportunity to celebrate. They celebrated with true joy from understanding the word of God (Neh.8:12).
  • They confessed their sins. Reading and studying of scripture mad clear two things to them:
  • They saw the ugliness of man. The word made it clear what was wrong with their lives, the cause of ruins and the disaster around them. It discovered that they were the problem. They were covered with shame and saw the clear solution of their problems. Look at these verses from Nehemiah 9;
